FMCG distribution

Where sales slip today

  • Retailers who order every week stop, and you notice when the month’s numbers come in.
  • A brand looking for a distributor in your area enquires once; a slow reply loses the brand.
  • Schemes, credit and returns need a person, but they arrive mixed with routine orders.

How the sale runs, with your digital team

Each step, as it often goes for FMCG distributors and super stockists today, and what your team does instead. A person approves every message.

  1. An enquiry comes in

TodayRetailer orders and brand enquiries land in the same phone.

    Asha, digital employee

With your teamAsha reads every enquiry from your lead sites, mailbox, WhatsApp and enquiry form, marks it a lead or not, and gives a fit score with the reasons.

  2. Who is asking

TodayA brand and a retailer get the same answer.

    Asha, digital employee

With your teamAsha asks which products and how much, where the shop is and which delivery day suits, and whether the buyer is a retailer, a wholesaler or a brand looking for a distributor.

  3. The reply

TodayReplies promise what the office cannot keep.

    Asha, digital employee

With your teamAsha drafts the reply from your approved brands, areas and delivery days. She never offers schemes you have not approved, credit you do not give, or prices above MRP.

  4. Distributorships and credit

    TodayImportant conversations start late.

    Asha, digital employee

With your teamWhen a buyer mentions a distributorship, super stockist, credit, a scheme claim, expiry or a return, Asha hands the buyer to you with their own words as proof.

  5. The usual order

TodayQuiet outlets are spotted too late.

    Ravi, digital employee

With your teamRavi reads your past sales, works out each customer’s usual gap between orders, and drafts a reminder a week before the next order is due. Customers who go quiet become a call for their owner.

Industry background your team starts with

How the trade works

  • Brands appoint distributors or super stockists for a territory; the distributor buys stock, holds it and serves retailers in that area.
  • Retailers order often and in small quantities; delivery on fixed days (beats) and a reliable salesman matter to them.
  • Margins on each brand are set by the company; schemes and trade offers are passed on to retailers and claimed back.
  • Stock close to expiry, damaged goods and scheme claims need careful tracking, or they eat the margin.

Rules that apply

  • Distributors and wholesalers of food need an FSSAI licence or registration.
  • Packaged goods must show MRP, net quantity and other details under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules; goods cannot be sold above MRP.
  • Goods moving above the GST value limit need an e-way bill.

What brands and retailers check

  • Brands looking for a distributor ask about area covered, number of outlets served, warehouse, vehicles, team and the money you can put into stock.
  • Retailers compare delivery days, credit, schemes and how quickly short supplies and returns are handled.
  • B2B ordering apps and quick commerce now compete for retailer orders, so service and relationships matter more.

Questions owners ask

Set up for how you sell:

Watch the 3-minute walkthrough

Will it promise margins or an exclusive territory?

No. “Guaranteed margin” is never said, and exclusive territory is a topic it leaves to you.

How does it know when a retailer should reorder?

Ravi reads your past sales from a CSV or a Tally export and works out each outlet’s usual gap between orders.

Does it chase dues?

Not yet. Payment reminders are planned for a separate Collections employee.
